John Galliano (Juan Carlos Antonio Galliano-Guillen) was born Nov. 28, 1960, in Gibraltar, but he lived in England from the age of 6. He studied fashion design at Saint Martin’s School of Art, graduating in 1984 with a degree in fashion design. He and his clothes were immediately popular locally, and soon had sold to Bloomingdale’s and Bergdorf Goodman in the U.S. He went about building his label with the help of various friends and financial backers. After a decade of working under the Galliano name, he was hired in 1995 to design for the House of Givenchy, which made him the 1st British designer to be the creative head of a Paris fashion house. In 1996 he moved to Christian Dior (replacing Gianfrano Ferre). Galliano was named British Designer of the Year in 1987, 1994, 1995 and 1997 (sharing with Alexander McQueen in ’97). In Feb. 2011 he was engulfed in scandal when video of his drunken outburst – including antisemitic remarks, which is a crime in France – in a Paris restaurant went public. As a result, he was fired from Dior. Galliano made public apologies for his behavior and admitted that he was an alcoholic. In 2013, Oscar de la Renta became the first to hire post-scandal Galliano to design again, then in 2014 he took the role of creative director at Maison Margiela (his 1st show was in Jan. 2015). Also in 2014 he presented the Outstanding Achievement Award to Vogue editor Anna Wintour at the British Fashion Awards.
