Karl Lagerfeld’s career is one of the most remarkable in fashion history. His work for Chanel, Fendi, and Chloé have had an inestimable effect on modern fashion. A prolific creator, his resumé includes work for many labels (including his own), for stage and screen, his photography, and, later, his work directing for film. Karl Otto Lagerfeldt was born in Hamburg, Germany. There has been confusion about his birth year, but 1933 and 1935 are popular theories. When he was college age, he won a fashion design contest, and was hired by Paris designer Pierre Balmain (1955). Next, he designed couture for Jean Patou (using the name Roland Karl). In 1965, he became head designer at Chloé. In 1970, he designed for Curiel, a couture label in Rome. In 1972, he started his work at Fendi. During this time, he was also designing costumes for theater. In 1982, he began designing for Chanel. In 1984, he launched his own label. Today, he continues to lead the Chanel, Fendi, and Lagerfeld labels. In 2013, a documentary called Karl Lagerfeld Draws Himself was released. Vogue wrote, “In a business that tosses the word “icon” about with reckless abandon, he is genuinely iconic.” www.karl.com
