Ralph Lauren was born Ralph Lifshitz, on Oct. 14, 1939, in the Bronx, New York. His parents had immigrated from Belarus. His father was a house painter. In school, he sold ties to other students. He changed his last name to Lauren when he was 16. He dropped out of college. He started a small necktie business in the ’60s. By 1970, he had lines of mens- and womenswear. He won the COTY Award for his mens wear collection in 1970. In 1972, he launched the now-iconic Polo shirt. He made the clothes for the movie The Great Gatsby and for Diane Keaten’s character in Annie Hall (also iconic).
