Michael Kors’ mother was a model, so he was around fashion from the beginning. When Michael was five, he designed the gown for his mother’s second marriage. He dropped out of the Fashion Institute (NYC) in his first year there and started selling his own clothing. His label exploded in 1981, after he was discovered by Dawn Mello (then with Bloomingdale’s). Today, Kors is officially a billionaire, and his designs are popular with celebrities ranging from pop and movie stars to the First Lady of the United States. He’s widely known for his role on Project Runway, and in 2013 Time Magazine named him one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World.
