“By the time he died, in 2006, designer Oleg Cassini had seduced the “top top girls” of his day, from Grace Kelly to Marilyn Monroe to Anita Ekberg, married Hollywood stunner Gene Tierney, and shaped the look of the absolutely toppest girl of all, Jacqueline Kennedy.” (Vanity Fair) Count Oleg Cassini Loiewski was born in Paris in 1913 (his mother was a Cassini, his father a Loiewski). Cassini grew up in Florence, Italy, and studied political science and art before getting into fashion design. After working for Jean Patou, he opened a shop in Rome to sell his own clothing. In 1936, Cassini moved to the U.S. and, after a short time in New York, settled in Los Angeles where he began designing for Paramount Pictures. Starting in 1940, Cassini created the look of many leading movie stars – Veronica Lake, Gene Tierney (he was married to Tierney for 11 years), Rita Hayworth, Betty Grable, Joan Crawford, Marilyn Monroe, Gina Lollobrigida, Jayne Mansfield, Natalie Wood, Ursula Andress, and others. In the late 40s he moved back to New York City and launched his own fashion house. His lines for men and women were very successful. In 1960, First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy named Cassini her official White House designer, and he had a leading role in shaping her iconic look. In 1987 he released an autobiography which The New York Times compared to the writings of Casanova. Oleg Cassini died in March of 2006 at the age of 92.
